One of the biggest moments at any child’s birthday party is when everyone gathers around the cake to sing and blow out the candles. You want to ensure that the cake you choose for your little one’s big day is a hit, but it can be hard to know just what kids are into.

1. Princesses

2. Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty has been around since 1974, but the pretty kitty cat is still every bit as popular today as she was then. Many bakeries like HEB and Target have at least one licensed Hello Kitty design. Some even have round, sheet and multi-tier cakes to choose from.

Often, Hello Kitty cakes are chosen for younger girls like toddlers and preschoolers, but older girls may like them as well.

3. Monster High

Grade school girls will get a scream out of a Monster High cake from Sams Club. A number of other grocery store bakeries have sheet cakes that include plastic Monster High toys or icing designs that look like the characters. They’re great for pairing with Monster High themed party decorations for girls’ birthday sleepovers.

Kids Birthday Cakes

1. Sesame Street

Toddlers and preschoolers still love Sesame Street as much as their parents did when they were young. A number of bakeries have special cake designs that include many characters from the show or that focus on one of the popular characters like Ernie and Bert, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Elmo or Oscar the Grouch.

2. Dora and Diego

4. Animals

If you’re looking for a unique cake for your little one’s birthday but don’t want to pick a licensed character cake, an animal cake could be a great alternative.

Many bakeries sell cakes that are decorated with plastic animal toys or are decorated with icing to look like an animal’s head. Some offer elaborate kids’ birthday cakes that are sculpted to resemble the shape of an animal’s head or body or that are made up of cupcakes arranged to look like an animal.

Some popular animals featured in cake designs are cats, dogs, horses, caterpillars, butterflies, ladybugs, lambs and cows.
